Wrapping up the qualifying tournaments for the
2007 season FOCAS (Fellowship of Christian Anglers and Sportsman) visited the
largest man made lake in Illinois, Carlyle Lake. Spotty heavy thunderstorms on
the areas feeding the water shed brought about a rise in water of about 12
inches in the last week. Surprisingly the water was not too muddy from the
influx of water across most of the lake. The backs of some tributaries and
further north showed signs of the rain fall but most of the lake was about the
normal clarity for this impoundment which is typically at best one to two feet
of visibility. Weather also cooperated with most of the day being cloudy and
over cast and mild temperatures and moderate winds. For those who have fished
Carlyle Lake before anything less than 15 mph is considered pretty moderate to
almost calm.
Take off at 6:00 AM saw 38 boats hit the water and
try to outwit the wily Carlyle largemouth bass. Reports had been very mixed to
some stating they were on nothing at all to others who thought they were going
to really whack them. Apparently the condition changes also produced some
changes in the fishing patterns and catches were nominal. Most teams reported
few keeper bites if any bites at all and only 4 limits made it to the scales.

1ST PLACE TEAM
JASON DOWNEN AND CARL WASEM
The top finishing team however certainly seemed to
have found the ticket for this event. Carl Wasem of Belleville, IL and Jason
Downen of Fairview
Heights, IL caught fish all over the lake all day long
and even culled through 8 keepers to bring in the winning sack which weighed
13.89 pounds. They used black and blue jigs and spinner baits in one to three
feet of water to bring in the best five fish limit. Top position brought them a
check for $1300.00. They are sponsored by 111 Prop Shop, Metro East Fiberglass,
and Monken Buick of Centralia, IL.

2ND PLACE TEAM
JERRY WILLIAMS AND
DAVE MAHLANDT
For anyone familiar with Carlyle Lake the 2nd
Place Team is a well know pair. It is certainly not unusual to find them in the
check line on any tournament on this lake. Jerry Williams of Carlyle, IL and
Dave Mahlandt of Breese, IL showed their prowess on this impoundment by bringing
in a five fish limit as well that lit up the display at 12.98 pounds. Working
the midlake region and staying out on the main lake they found their fish in 3
to 4 feet of water and caught them on a number of different presentations. One
keeper came on a crank bait, two on salty craws, and the final two keepers on a
Sweet Beaver. These five fish were their only keeper bites and in fact they only
had 3 short fish bite as well. But those five keepers were enough to get a check
for $950.00. they are sponsored by The Breese Journal.

3RD PLACE TEAM
KEN BAILEY AND JIM
WEIS
In 3rd Place were Ken Bailey of
Millstadt, IL and Jim Weis of Waterloo, IL with a five fish limit of 12.36
pounds. They had six keepers across the event and broke off one other fish.
These were the only bites they had all day but they were enough to earn $550.00.
They used blue fleck worms and spinner baits on the south end of the lake. They
list Schatze’s of Belleville, IL as their sponsor.

4TH PLACE
BILL
TRICKERY AND
RICK BECKMAN
In 4th place and rounding out the top team
positions were Rick Beckman of Carlyle, IL and Bill Trickey of Pierron, IL.
Their 4 fish stringer hit the scales at 9.77 pounds and drew a check for
$400.00. They fished a jig on lay downs in the midlake areas on secondary
points. They had four bites across the event but they made everyone of them
count.

B&R OUTLAW ROD BIG BASS AWARD
RUSTY REICKERT AND ED
HELK
The B&R OUTLAW ROD BIG BASS AWARD went to long
time FOCAS members Rusty Reickert of Red Bud, IL and Ed Helf of Belleville, IL.
They outdistanced everyone with a lunker that went 4.45 pounds. They caught it
about 11:30 on a blue fleck worm off of rocks on the south end of the lake. They
received a check for $228.00 plus a new B&R OUTLAW fishing
rod.

2ND PLACE BIG BASS
JACK WATKINS AND
FRANK WINKLER
Final paying position went to Jack Watkins of
Belleville, IL and Frank Winkler of Bonne Terre, MO for 2nd Place Big Bass.
Frank caught the fish about 11:00 AM also on a buzzbait off of a mud bank in
about 3 feet of water in the Peppenhorst Branch. It weighed in at 3.74 pounds
and earned them a payout of $152.00. They are sponsored by Leisure Time Pools of
Swansea, IL, Scenic Rivers Boats and Motors, Bonne Terre, MO, Charger Boats,
B&R Outlaw Rods, Flying Fisherman Sunglasses and Sportswear, Islamorada, FL,
and 7/24 Outdoors.com.
FOCAS will be holding their championship event on
